An air conditioner that runs but doesn’t cool properly can have several causes, including a dirty filter, restricted airflow, a dirty evaporator or condenser coil, thermostat problems, electrical issues, or a refrigerant-related problem. If changing the filter doesn’t solve the issue, an HVAC technician should inspect the system and determine the cause rather than simply adding refrigerant without diagnosing the problem.
Warm air from your vents can be caused by an incorrect thermostat setting, a failed capacitor or contactor, refrigerant problems, compressor issues, or an outdoor unit that isn’t operating properly. Turn the system off if you notice unusual noises, burning smells, or other signs of equipment failure and have the system professionally inspected.
Frequent starting and stopping—often called short cycling—can be caused by thermostat problems, airflow restrictions, electrical components, improper system sizing, or other equipment issues. Short cycling can affect comfort and place unnecessary wear on the HVAC system, so recurring cycling should be diagnosed by a qualified technician.
Your air conditioner removes moisture from indoor air, which normally drains through the condensate system. Water around the indoor equipment may indicate a clogged condensate drain, drain pan problem, frozen coil, or another drainage issue. Because leaking water can damage ceilings, flooring, and surrounding materials, the cause should be addressed promptly.
Restricted airflow and refrigeration-system problems are common reasons an evaporator coil can freeze. A dirty filter, dirty coil, blower problem, or refrigerant issue may contribute to freezing. Continuing to operate a frozen system can make the problem worse. Turn the cooling system off and have it inspected if the coil repeatedly freezes.
